Laura Sturm

Laura Sturm has been a professional actor, director, teacher and coach in the Chicago area (and recently also in Milwaukee) for over 20 years. She earned her MFA here at NIU and is so excited to come back here to teach – it feels like coming home.

Over the years, Laura has taught acting, voice and movement at Columbia College Chicago, Governors State University, North Central College and Oakton Community College, as well as at several professional studios in Chicago, including the Actors’ Center and Act One Studios.  The base of her movement pedagogy originates primarily from the Williamson Technique and Laban work that she learned here at NIU, but she specializes in freeing the body and assisting students in relearning to play with no apologies, and she grows this pedagogy every year with additional research and classes. Laura also specializes in Meisner/Stanislavski acting, period style movement and acting, audition skills and consent-based practices, and she is also in the process of studying to be an intimacy director.

Laura has worked with such Chicago theaters as Organic, New Colony, Mary-Arrchie, Remy Bumppo, Victory Gardens, Boho, Stage Left, Northlight, Raven, Bailiwick and many others, in addition to a summer with the Texas Shakespeare Festival.  She also serves as a private acting and movement coach, having worked with numerous actors and organizations over the years, including serving as Movement Director on an episode of Fox’s The Exorcist.
