Undergraduate Admissions

Welcome to the NIU School of Music! We're glad you're interested in studying with us. At NIU, you get the best of everything, from individualized instruction and support to all the resources and experiences offered by a major university. You'll work one-on-one with our world-renowned faculty, who perform throughout the country and globally. Since we're just 65 miles west of Chicago, you'll have access to the music and culture of the city while you thrive in a hometown community that allows you to focus on your craft.

Application Process

Each of the steps below must be completed by your audition date.

  Review application requirements and priority deadlines for applying to NIU.

  Complete your supplemental application

  Most music programs will require that you provide contact info for two references as part of your music application.

  Register for Your Audition

  Register for your audition/interview

  Our formal audition days are held in February. Review audition dates, materials and other requirements prior to your audition day.
